Þingvellir National Park is a natural wonder where the geology and ecosystem of Þingvallavatn form a unique whole. Few places, if any, have a similar connection to the history of Iceland and the Icelandic nation, since major events in the history of Iceland have taken place at Þingvellir. Today, Þingvellir is a protected national shrine in order to maintain the original natural features and landscape of the area.

Þingvellir National Park was accepted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. As a World Heritage Site, Þingvellir is considered one of the places of importance to cultural or natural heritage that have a unique value on a global level. The World Heritage registration comes with great responsibility to maintain the unique value of the site, which has been successfully implemented at Þingvellir. The site is constantly developing with an emphasis on the protection of nature and cultural heritage.

Þingvellir National Park is one of the most popular destinations of Iceland where guests have access to a range of services. Guided walks are available, as well as information about the history and nature of the area, where the future development of the site towards greater sustainability is addressed. Guests can explore the area by beautiful hiking trails and learn about the history and geology of the area from information signs as they walk around. A restaurant is available in the area and parking and toilets are accessible to guests. Travellers can also find two camping sites within the National Park.
