Workshops
In the fall of 2021, workshops were conducted at Jökulsárlón, Gullfoss, Geysir and Þingvellir. The workshops were led by French consultants that have worked on a similar project in France, called “Grand Sites de France”. Among the suggestions of the consultants is protection of the unique position and spirit of each destination, to keep infrastructure subtle and look into how the cultural heritage is shared and promoted at the site.
Survey for tourists at the Sites of Merit

The Ministry of Culture and Business Affairs entrusted the Icelandic Tourism Research Centre with a test run of a survey for tourists at Geysir, Gullfoss, Jökulsárlón and Þingvellir in the summer of 2022. The Research Centre also elaborated data collection for the survey.

The goal of the workshops was to measure the destinations to the Sites of Merit ideology and guidelines, and to get an outside opinion from the consultants on the status and development of the destinations with reference to the experience in France. The workshops were divided into two parts. The first part included field visits to the destinations where the local conditions were examined along with the landscape, organisation and infrastructure development, and how these things could affect how the sites are experienced. The second part included workshops where the goal was to form a mutual future vision for the destinations.

The results and suggestions of the consultants are now available below. They will come in handy for the destinations to plan how they aim to move forward towards the ideology of the project, in order to become Sites of Merit within a certain range of time.
